This course provides a detailed examination of the structure and layout of the Primary School Curriculum for both Visual Arts and Music. Strategies for making the most of the curricula are presented and methodologies for achieving the objectives of each strand are outlined, as well as effective ways of linking the curriculum strands.

  About this Course  
  What does the course involve?  
The format for a Hibernia College Online Summer Course is as follows: 
  • 5 fully interactive lessons complete with audio, links and exercises to complete
  • A moderated discussion forum to answer course-related questions, share you experiences with your teaching colleagues and communicate with your facilitator
  • Reflective Learning Log where you reflect on your understanding of the course and how you will use it in your day to day teaching
  • Completion of a course gives 3 EPV Days.  Your individual entitlement for EPV days should be checked with the DES.
  • A course is expected to take 20 hours to complete
  • Each course has a facilitator who will be in contact with you regularly and whom you can contact by email with any queries before or during the course

Gerardine Ó Cathasaigh M.Ed. is teaching since 1980. An honours graduate from Mary Immaculate College of Education and University College Cork, she has taught every class in the Primary School, teaching through the medium of English and Irish.

She is the vice-principal of Gaelscoil Sáirséal in Limerick and has spent the last four years with the Primary Curriculum Support Programme and the Regional Curriculum Support Service. She has taught Piano in Limerick School of Music, has lectured part-time in Mary Immaculate College of Education and is a tutor with Hibernia College both in the Music and Visual Arts areas. She works with Limerick Education Centre, Cork Education Support Centre and Tralee Education Centre on designing and delivering Continuous Professional Development Courses for teachers.

Musical Director and fouder of Lechéile Choir, she has recently travelled and conducted the choir in Vienna. She is no stranger to Choral music and has worked with church choirs and children’s choirs.

  Course Authors  
Michael O Reilly is the author of the Visual Arts section of this course. He is the co-ordinator of the visual arts programme for the Higher Diploma in Primary Education course with Hibernia College. In that role he designs the on-line and on-site materials, organises tutors, organises the visual arts elements of the Gaeltacht and sets and corrects examination papers.

Michael was the chairperson for the Arts committee with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment ( NCCA )that originally wrote the Visual Arts, Music and Drama curricula. He worked for many years with the Primary Curriculum Support Programme ( PCSP ) as an English and Visual Arts trainer and as a Visual Arts Cuiditheoir. He delivers a wide variety of courses on the topic of visual arts for a number of education centres on a regular basis.

Michael has worked in a wide variety of schools both as a classroom teacher, as a principal and as a learning support teacher. He has recently resigned the principalship of a special school in Bray to work as a shared learning support teacher based in Lismacaffrey, Co. Westmeath with a view to concentrating on his own artwork and on designing and writing educational materials.

Michael is a widely published author in the education field. His published work includes a wide variety of work on anti-racist and intercultural education, an English language programme and a wide rage of materials on visual arts education. Aileen Donagher McGowan, one of the Music authors, has been teaching since 1986. She has taught all classes throughout her teaching career. She is the principal of Owenbeg N.S. in West Co. Sligo. Aileen is a musician who plays a variety of instruments including flute, uilleann pipes, piano, guitar, bodhrán and spoons! She also designed the content of the primary music education programme for schools with the Vogler String Quartet, and worked with the primary teachers participating in the project. She is currently working as a music trainer with the Primary Curriculum Support Programme.


One of the Music authors, Clare Griffin graduated from U.C.C. in 1994 with a B.C.L. (honours) degree and then studied for a B.Ed. degree in Mary Immaculate College Limerick, graduating from there in 1998 with an honours degree. Clare works as Deputy Principal of Ennis Educate Together National School. She is presently on secondment and works as a music trainer for the Primary Curriculum Support Programme. Clare has taught music to all class levels and co-authored the Music Teaching Methodologies module for Hibernia College. Clare is presently working with the Arts Council on drafting guidelines 'Towards best practice', for use by artists and teachers in schools to enhance the teaching and learning of the Arts curricula. Clare has worked with the I.N.T.O. and education centres on the continuous professional development of teachers in the area of music. She has worked with children in small groups, in choirs and in instrumental ensemble groups.
